Ancient Coba was one of the largest and important Maya cities in Yucatan. Recently, intensive restoration activities have taken place in this, in the middle of in the jungle situated, archeological city. Among other things 2 ball game fields has been restored where an interesting stele has been found.
From your hotel and go land inwards towards Coba. We will pass a number of Maya villages where the population lives of agriculture. Ancient Coba was one of the largest and important Maya cities in Yucatan. Recently, intensive restoration activities have taken place in this, in the middle of in the jungle situated, archeological city. Among other things 2 ball game fields has been restored where an interesting stele has been found. Coba was never been discovered by the Spanish and the first not-Maya came to this place in 1840. Especially in the last decade much has been restored. The main construction is the 42 meters high Nohoch Mul, or “large hill”, as the highest Maya pyramid in the Maya language is called. From the top of this pyramid you have a fantastic view overlooking the jungle. After our visit to the ruins we will go to a Cenote near the ruins where you can have a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water.
Our lunch will be in Coba. After lunch we go to Punta Laguna. Punta Laguna is a small Mayan-community at the shores of a lagoon. Around the lagoon is a national reserve where spider monkeys and howler monkeys can be found. The Mayan population of Punta Laguna, who manage the reserve by themselves and live now mainly from eco-tourism. The hike through this untouched jungle is already a special experience. After the jungle hike we pay a visit to a Maya family in the village.
After our visit to Punta Laguna we drive back to Playa del Carmen and Cancun.
